There was an option of whether or not to carry out a system scan when windows starts when first starting the program. I choose to do so. The software aesthetics are pleasing. Everything is reassuringly easy to find with all the available screens uncluttered and to the point. I was quite taken aback by how many jobs this software can carry out. It appears at first that it is far more than just a registry tool. On closer examination though most of the screens are using the computer resources and services. Registry Mechanic shows such services in a much more user friendly manner though. In fact most computer users wouldn't know such services exist. You can monitor lots of different processes at a simple mouse click and also control various important windows tools. Much more convenient to locate these tools by opening up Registry Mechanic than having to root around in the control panel or typing in commands in the start/run box.
Well this is what the software is primarily for so I carried out a scan. Over in just seconds and I was surprised to find I had over 400 faults!
After the complete scan had been carried out I choose to repair the faults. The next screen told me that as this was a trial only the first 6 sections would be repaired. Fair enough I knew there would be some sort of limitation on a trial version. I could continue or purchase the software so I chose to continue. Registry Mechanic repaired 12 faults.
There is an option on the Home screen to 'Compact Your Registry' . I fired it up but was greeted with the message that I had to purchase the software to implement the savings. The optimization had reduced my registry size by 9%. Pressing the 'Optimize Your System' link and then the button to carry out the optimization seemed to work though the only thing that changed was the button text. Next on the agenda was the 'Tune Up Your Services' which I investigated. I ran 2 buttons on this screen - 'Recommended Services' and 'Minimal Services'. Both worked on the trial version which resulted in loads of my computer resources and services being optimized. End result should be my computer will run a little faster and hopefully boot a little faster; though as I am running a pretty powerful computer with high performance scsi hard drives any gain will probably not be noticeable. Clicking on the 'Monitor Your Registry' reduces Registry Mechanic to your taskbar where it will keep an eye on the registry automatically. Right or left clicking the icon will restore the Registry Mechanic screen.
Registry Mechanic has been a market leader in this field for a long time. During that time it has improved and been refined. It really is a great tool and one that sits sweetly on my computer. I might well purchase this software myself as using my computer with over 400 found faults doesn't seem the right thing to do somehow. Maybe if I send an email to the makers of this software and show them my appraisal I will get this software for free - worth a shot!
